About me

Hello, my name is Tycho Henzen, I'm Software engineer and Game developer. I just graduated as a Software engineer with a specialization in game development & technology

I slightly prefer game development over Software engineering because i feel it's a more versatile field which isn't as rigidly defined as general software engineering, allowing for a somewhat more free approach to various problems

game development

I have experience using game engines like Unity3D, Outracks Realtime Studio, XNA and LWJGL. Both in order to create games from scratch, as well as expanding upon existing projects

I also have experience using various graphics libraries, such as DirectX and OpenGL, to create some game-like projects

Finally i have created several games that use none of the techniques described above, and are coded using a "minimal libraries" setup, mainly using java's most basic components

Sadly, im not nearly as good as i would like to be in creating graphics and audio, although i can create some decent icon-sized pixel art, which has served me quite well on my journey into game development so far

Software engineering

I have experience using netbeans, eclipse, intelliJ and microsoft visual studio as IDE's and have knowledge of many of the frameworks available for java, java enterprise, and C#

i also have experience with a large selection of development tools and techniques, such as AGILE development, version control (SVN and git), jenkins, glassfish, jboss, etc.

Teamwork

since team work is one of the most important qualities for a software engineer/game developer to have, i feel it warrants its own section. I think it's only fair to say i'm not the best at communicating when i first join a new development team.

I have a slight tendency to keep quiet in a team i don't know well, but if communication within the team is good, this shouldn't become an issue.

Work History

2015

Game Developer

your company?

I am currently looking for a job in a game development company.

2014-2015

Game Developer intern

TWNKLS Augmented Reality, Rotterdam

My internship at TWNKLS Augmented Reality formed the final exam for my education. From September 2014 until January 2015 i worked here in order to create an augmented reality product for the Yumble Augmented/Virtual reality theme park. One of the most important parts of this internship was to prove i am able to perform an applied form of research in order to figure out how to perform this project.
As i often do, i also created some small experimental projects during this internship

  • you can read more about the main project here
  • you can read more about the node-based content generator here
  • you can read more about the unfinished LD21 project i did here
  • you can read more about the Modular game engine experiment here
  • you can read more about the Neuron simulator here

2013

Game Developer intern

Gray Lake Studios / Dreams of Danu, Utrecht

My first internship in light of my education was at Gray Lake Studios / Dreams of Danu, a collaboration of 2 game development studio's located in the Dutch Game Garden in Utrecht from January until Semtember 2013, my main responsibilities included working on gust, as well as a "free choice" project in light of my internship.
As i usually do, i also did a proof-of-concept project in the free time i had left during this internship

  • You can read more about Unity agents here
  • You can read more about Gust here
  • You can read more about the shader experiments i did here

2012

General store attendant

Van den berg elektro, Bladel

This was a summer holliday job. As a general store attendant, i had a wide range of responsibilities. stocking shelves, customer Checkout, and updating the company website, to name a few

2009

Stocking shelves

Plus Planells Supermarkt, Eersel

This job was only short-lived due to the large amounts of travel time (~2 hour a day) to and from school. this, combined with roughly fulltime school weeks, makes the period afterwards not very suited for part-time jobs

2008-2009

Stocking shelves

Jumbo Supermarkt, Bladel

My first part-time job. As my first year's contract drew to a close, my boss had decided not to extend my contract because i was too slow. we still suspect "slow" and "expensive" were synonymous to them. however that doesn't mean i haven't taken the criticism to heart

Education History

2009-2015

Software Engineering/Game Development

Fontys University of Applied Sciences. - Eindhoven

where possible I have chosen to follow the route that would lead me to a game development specialization.

Although the journey through this education has been troublesome at times, this was mainly caused by classes that addressed my weaknesses, such as management and design-related courses

Extracurricular courses:
  • linear algebra
  • C++/OpenGL
2008-2009

Batchelor IT

TU Eindhoven. - Eindhoven

This education was not finished successfully since the level of the mathematics/logic classes went a little over my head at the time.

2007-2008

VWO

Rythovius college. - Eersel

The final year of my high school education was finished on a different school since we moved early 2007.

2002-2007
